On Saturday, December 5, Hatfield-McCoy Trails will hold its 2nd annual Little Coal Christmas Open House and Ride for Tots from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the Little Coal River System.
Registration is only $10.00 on-site at the Little Coal River Visitors Center, and serves as a donation to the Boone County Sheriff Department’s “Shop with a Cop” program for local children. “Shop with a Cop” identifies local children whose families need a little extra support making the holidays bright. Law enforcement officers bring the children to Charleston for a steakhouse meal and shopping trip to buy toys, clothes, and other things the young ones need.
“We’re really proud to work with these children,” said Chad Barker, Chief Deputy at the Boone County Sheriff’s Department. “Every kid deserves something special at Christmas, and our department is honored to be part of providing that.”
Hatfield-McCoy Trails’ Debbie Estep saw a role for the Trails’ after last year’s open house. “We hold poker runs and other events with small fees attached all the time. What better time of year to turn that fee into a donation to a community program supporting our kids?”
Riders will visit check points on the trail, retrieving a holiday ribbon at each one. Ribbons will be turned in for prize drawings the day of the run. Prizes include a 2-night stay at Kathryn’s Kabins valued at $185.00, a 2-night stay at the Little Coal River Campground valued at $170.00, and a TrailFest gift certificate worth $110.00.
