Spring and Summer activities

Working around the trailheads, a lot of our CSR's often hear the question, "What is there for me to do when I come off the trails?" The most common answer is, given whatever time of the year it may be - plenty! Especially in the Spring and Summer months. There is always something going on in Hatfield-McCoy Country, from things such as the Matewan Massacre Reenactment to the Logan Freedom Festival to West Virginia Days at Chief Logan State Park. Many of our smaller communities have annual festivals and many of our civic organizations and clubs host regular community events. Probably the easiest way to keep track of what may be going on in the region you are visiting is to check out the web pages of community newspapers such as the Williamson Daily News, Gilbert Times or the Logan Banner, some of which feature a "Community Calender" which has information about such events. Here are just a few such events that will be taking place in June and July and August in Logan County that I got a flyer about not long ago. For our outdoorsmen visitors you may want to make your plans to catch the first ever Chief Logan Hunting and Fishing Outdoor Expo on July 16 and 17 at Chief Logan State Park's Convention and Conference Center. This great event is being sponsored by the Logan County Chamber of Commerce and the Hatfield-McCoy Convention and Visitor's Bureau and will feature world famous bowhunter Chuck Adams, as well as all sorts of vendors, gear and other activities, including an Archery Tournament, Bird Dog seminars, Coyote calling seminars and more. For more about this event you can contact Debrina Williams or Erica O'Bryant at 304-752-1324. I am particularly excited about Chuck Adams being there and giving tips. If you have seen him on television or read any of his articles in national magazines, you know Chuck Adams is the real deal in the world of Archery Hunting and he focuses on SKILL, rather than equipment. The fine gals and guys at the Aracoma Story Inc. at Chief Logan State Park Amphitheater have some major shows planned in June, July and August with outdoor presentations of "Cinderella", "The Aracoma Story:Spirits and Legends", and "Disney's The Jungle Book." First up will come the beloved fairy tale Cinderella from June 14-July 3. You can enjoy Cinderella, the wicked step sisters and ol Prince Charming himself as the classic fable comes to life on stage with music and comedy for the whole family's enjoyment. A variation on local folklore The Aracoma Story focuses on events in the lives of Chief John Logan, Chief Cornstalk, Princess Aracoma and a rather whitewashed Bolling Baker (the real Baker was a renagade who made Simon Girty look like a Boy Scout) which blends the stories of the pioneers verses the Native Americans into an exciting outdoor drama. This is a new version of the story which has been in constant annual production for decades. While historical accuracy takes a back seat, other than that the show is tremendously enjoyable due to the great cast, sets, costumes and action. The Aracoma Story Spirits and Legends runs from July 19 - August 6. More music and family fun return to the stage when Rudyard Kipling's classic tale of a boy raised by Jungle Animals comes to life in Disney's The Jungle Book from August 9-14. The Jungle will be Jumping again when the very best local actors and actresses in the youth category being the tale to audiences of all ages. Last summer the show drew in hundreds nightly and you can see why starting August 9-14. And remember, these are just a few of the things you can enjoy and do in the afternoons and evenings when you visit Hatfield-McCoy Country. We have a lot more to offer than JUST the finest outdoor ATV, Dirtbike and Side by Side trails in the USA.
